Thankful Thursday – in the Blink of an Eye

BLINK
Today I am thankful for the blink of an eye.
That’s what my life on this earth is – a blink of an eye.
Whatever pain or struggles I face today will be gone in the blink of an eye. Even though the pain is real, it is temporary. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

The things that loom so large in my gaze today, the struggles that consume so much of my time and attention, are not the real story of my life.

Yes, I’m thankful that my pain is temporary and as brief as a blink in light of eternity. But I’m also thankful for each blink of my eye while I’m still here on this earth. It seems like only yesterday that I was holding my boys as infants, gazing with a goofy grin at their precious tiny hands and feet.

Today my boys are young men, taller than me and making more of their own decisions.
BLINK
Today I am also changed. I am not who I was yesterday, last year, last millennium. And as I grow and change, God becomes larger in my life. Just like in Prince Caspian, when Lucy tells Aslan, the Christ figure, that he looks bigger. And Aslan corrects her by saying that Lucy herself has grown, and with each passing year of growth, Aslan appears larger, too. As she increases her capacity to know him, he grows larger in her life.
The truth is that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), but my capacity to know and enjoy Him continues to grow and change.

Pain is fleeting – like the blink of an eye (thank you, Lord). Each moment of life is precious – and to be savored for all it’s worth (thank you, Lord). And each day is filled with opportunities to enlarge God in the eyes of others as He becomes larger in my life (thank you, thank you, Lord).

So true, Rebecca. One day when we’re face to face with Jesus, we will probably be amused by how permanent we once thought this world was. Here’s hoping we can both blink today, while keeping our eyes on Him. 🙂
Linda, how grateful I am to find your words today. I am visiting my mother who has very recently discovered that she has terminal gall bladde cancer. She is a practicing Carholic and has always known Christ, but I’m finding she has so many fears and worries that she has not turned over to Him.
I an anxious to share with her your words today as I feel they are very fitting for her situation. I have not known how to give her comfort other than reading her scripture as a reminder of God’s words for us. I am sad to see that her familiarity with scripture has not been incorporated into her daily living. I am hoping that what you have written today will link the two for her. She will be gone in a blink of an eye, hopefully knowing Christ a little bit more.
Donna, how loving God is that He would send your mother the gift of your presence with her as she walks through this dark valley. I’m praying not only that He will comfort and encourage your mom, but also that He would use you to bring grace and truth and peace to her. You’re in my thoughts and prayers today.
Thank you Linda and Donna. Today I am overwhelmed by my father’s needs–physical and spiritual–in a similar way. Blink! God is not overwhelmed, and he is able.

I am thankful for God’s way of giving us the desires of our heart even before we ask. He has provided us with an opportunity that we can not pass up & tho I’m excited I am also anxious about some decisions we need to make & details that need to be settled. I am however trusting that He will work all that out for us in His timing. I just wish I were able to stay as calm physically as I’d like to…thank you for the reminder…
